1. Foundational Principles: Physics, Information, and Emergent Order
Information and Entropy: In physics and mathematics, information is formally connected to entropy. Claude Shannon’s information theory defined “information entropy” with a formula analogous to the Boltzmann–Gibbs formula for thermodynamic entropy (en.wikipedia.org). Both involve probabilities of states and a logarithmic measure of uncertainty/disorder. In essence, gaining information about a system reduces uncertainty (entropy) in our description of it. This link is more than analogy – it hints that at a deep level, the physical universe and information content are related. In fact, the units of information (bits) can be tied to physical entropy: acquiring one bit of information about a system can reduce its entropy by a corresponding amount, and erasing one bit increases entropy. The famous anecdote of John von Neumann advising Shannon to use the term “entropy” was apt: no one knows what entropy really is, so in a debate you will always have the advantage – underscoring the mysterious but undeniable connection between information and fundamental physical uncertainty.
Thermodynamics and Maxwell’s Demon: The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that entropy (disorder) in a closed system tends to increase. James Clerk Maxwell’s 1867 thought experiment imagined a “demon” that uses information about individual molecules to sort fast (hot) and slow (cold) molecules into separate chambers, seemingly decreasing entropy without work. This paradox highlights the role of information in physical processes. The resolution came with Landauer’s Principle (1961), which showed that information-processing has a thermodynamic cost. Erasing or irreversibly manipulating a single bit of information dissipates a minimum energy of $k_B T \ln 2$ (Boltzmann’s constant times temperature times $\ln 2$) as heat (chemeurope.com). In other words, information is physical – any gain of informational order must be paid for by an increase in entropy elsewhere. When Maxwell’s demon measures and records molecule speeds, its memory fills up; erasing those records to repeat the cycle incurs an entropy cost that saves the Second Law (chemeurope.com). Modern experiments have validated Landauer’s prediction, linking each bit erased to a tiny heat release, and reversible computing schemes have been proposed to approach this limit. While not all physicists fully subscribe to this strong view, it has spurred fruitful thinking in quantum information science (e.g. quantum computing, which treats information as a physical resource that can be entangled, superposed, and processed in ways classical bits cannot).
Emergent Order and Complexity: A striking fact about our universe is that, despite the Second Law’s tendency toward disorder, we see the emergence of complex, ordered structures – galaxies, stars, planets, life, and minds. This does not violate thermodynamics: these pockets of order can form as long as the total entropy (including surrounding environment) increases. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics and complexity science describe how energy flows can drive self-organization. Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine’s theory of dissipative structures showed that systems far from equilibrium can spontaneously form ordered patterns by dissipating entropy into their environment. This provides the thermodynamic foundation for the existence of minds: the Sun’s energy, streaming to Earth, drives the increase of order on our planet at the expense of increased entropy radiated into space (wired.com). In short, physical laws permit and even encourage the emergence of information-rich structures under the right conditions, setting the stage for life and intelligence to evolve.
2. Biological Evolution of Intelligence
Natural Selection and the Rise of Cognition: Intelligence in the biological realm did not appear fully formed – it evolved gradually through natural selection. In Darwinian terms, cognitive abilities are biological traits that can confer survival and reproductive advantages, thus getting amplified over generations. Early life on Earth, for billions of years, had no neurons; single-celled organisms could exhibit simple responses (taxis toward nutrients, away from harm) based on chemical information. The advent of neurons and nervous systems allowed organisms to process information rapidly and in more complex ways, giving rise to behavior that is far more flexible than reflexive biochemistry. The Cambrian Explosion (~540 million years ago) saw an arms race of sensory organs and brains as predators and prey co-evolved – better vision, faster nerve signaling, and smarter behaviors became matters of life and death. Each improvement in processing environmental information (seeing a predator sooner, remembering where food is, communicating with kin) could tip the scales in survival. Thus, from an evolutionary perspective, intelligence can be seen as an extension of the organism’s ability to adapt to complex, changing environments. It is the ultimate general-purpose tool for survival: rather than rely on hardwired instincts alone, an intelligent creature can learn, innovate, and plan.
Survival Advantages of Intelligence: The evolutionary benefits of intelligence are multifaceted, and evidence for them comes from many species. Key advantages include:
Flexible Problem-Solving: Intelligent animals can invent new solutions on the fly. For example, crows have been observed bending twigs into hooks to fish out grubs from holes – a behavior not pre-programmed by instinct, but discovered through insight and learning. Similarly, apes use sticks to extract termites or stones to crack nuts, showing the benefit of mental trial-and-error and tool use to access food resources that less brainy competitors cannot.
Adaptation to Change: A clever predator can adjust when prey change their habits, and a clever prey can devise new ways to escape a novel threat. This flexibility means an intelligent species is less likely to be trapped by environmental changes. For instance, when climate fluctuations occur, animals with capacity for learning can find new shelters or switch diets more readily than specialized creatures.
Social Cooperation and Strategies: In social species, intelligence enables individuals to navigate complex group dynamics – forming alliances, remembering past interactions, and even deceiving others when advantageous. This “social intelligence” is hypothesized to be a major driver in primate brain evolution. Squirrels cache food for winter, which is instinctual, but larger-brained animals can go further: early humans, for instance, learned to preserve meat with smoke or develop seasonal migration strategies following game herds. Such foresight can be life-saving. Even within an animal’s lifetime, being able to anticipate what might happen (e.g. a predator’s likely movement) and plan one’s actions accordingly is beneficial.
In sum, cognition extends biology’s adaptive toolkit from mere reactive instincts to proactive, goal-directed behavior. It’s no surprise then that across the tree of life, we see multiple instances of heightened intelligence evolving in very different lineages – mammals (primates, cetaceans like dolphins), birds (corvids, parrots), cephalopods (octopus) – whenever complex challenges favor brains over brawn.
Costs and Trade-offs: Intelligence does not come free in evolution; it carries significant costs, which is why only certain lineages pursued this path aggressively. The human brain, for example, is a metabolically expensive organ – ~2% of body weight but consuming ~20% of the body’s energy at rest. For an animal, carrying a big brain means needing more food (and oxygen), which can be a liability if resources are scarce. There are also developmental costs: large brains often require longer developmental periods (human children remain dependent for many years while their brains grow and learn) and can complicate childbirth (the human newborn’s head size pushes the limits of the birth canal). This seems to have happened in a major way for our hominin ancestors a few million years ago. Paleontological evidence shows a dramatic increase in brain volume in the genus Homo over the past 2 million years. What changed to make bigger brains worth it? Scientists propose a few synergistic factors: a shift to a calorie-rich, high-protein diet (scavenging and hunting for meat) provided the fuel for a hungry brain and also required greater cleverness to obtain that food (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
Social living grew more complex, creating an “arms race” in social cognition (outsmarting rivals, coordinating in larger groups) (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). According to this hypothesis, humans evolved to specialize in a niche where survival depended on using knowledge, tools, and social coordination, thus selecting for ever more brain power (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). Comparative studies support some of these ideas: species that are long-lived, social, and carnivorous tend to have larger brains relative to body size, suggesting that hunting and social complexity drive intelligence (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). In our lineage, the invention of cooking (which makes more calories available) and the sharing of know-how via language likely further accelerated cognitive evolution (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).

Each increment in intelligence (better neural circuitry, more sophisticated cognition) opened new adaptive possibilities. That said, not all environments reward intelligence; many organisms survive just fine with simple instincts. Where brains paid off, however, natural selection did not shy away – it produced the complex nervous systems we see today. The fact that intelligence evolved convergently (independently) in disparate groups – e.g., mammals vs. octopuses – underscores that it is a general evolutionary solution, not a one-off fluke. In evolutionary biology terms, intelligence is a key adaptation: it allows an organism to model aspects of the world internally and use that model to guide behavior to its advantage. This may be the ultimate form of adaptation, as it frees the organism from being strictly bound by its immediate environment – a clever animal can anticipate, innovate, and even modify its environment (beavers building dams, humans building shelters and cities), thus rewriting the rules of survival. From this perspective, the purpose of intelligence in biology is clear: it is nature’s way of beating the odds – a tool to maximize an organism’s inclusive fitness in the face of complex, changing, and challenging conditions.
3. The Computational Nature of Intelligence
Intelligence as Information Processing: A core insight from cognitive science and neuroscience is that intelligence can be understood in terms of computation. The brain, though made of organic cells, essentially processes information – it receives inputs (sensory data), transforms and stores information (through electrical signals and synaptic changes), and produces outputs (behavior, decisions). This has led to the computational theory of mind (CTM), which holds that the mind is an information-processing system and that cognitive processes are a form of computation (en.wikipedia.org). In this view, thinking is to the brain as running a program is to a computer. Neural circuits perform algorithms on internal representations of the world. For example, when you mentally multiply 23×47 or plan a route to a destination, your brain is performing step-by-step operations on symbols or mental models – much like a computer would – albeit using neural hardware. Even aspects of consciousness might be explainable as emergent properties of complex computations among neurons (en.wikipedia.org).
This idea took shape in the mid-20th century, when pioneers like Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts (1943) showed that neural activity could be modelled with logic circuits, suggesting neurons compute boolean functions (en.wikipedia.org). By the 1950s and 1960s, the analogy between brains and digital computers was embraced: AI founders Allen Newell and Herbert Simon proposed the Physical Symbol System Hypothesis, asserting that “a physical symbol system has the necessary and sufficient means for general intelligent action” (debategraph.org). In plainer terms, any system (biological or artificial) that can manipulate symbols (representations) according to rules could, in principle, exhibit general intelligence. This underpins classical AI, which tried to hand-code rules and symbols to mimic reasoning. At the same time, others pursued a more brain-inspired approach: Frank Rosenblatt’s perceptron (1958) and later artificial neural networks tried to simulate the brain’s computing style – distributed, parallel, and learned patterns – rather than explicit symbolic logic. Both approaches treat cognition as computation, just at different levels (symbolic reasoning vs. sub-symbolic pattern recognition).
Neuroscience and Brain Computation: The human brain contains ~86 billion neurons interconnected by an estimated 100 trillion synapses (academic.oup.com). Each neuron is a tiny biological computer, summing inputs and firing an output signal when a threshold is exceeded. Neurons encode information in the timing and frequency of their electrical spikes. The entire brain can be seen as an enormously parallel computing device where each neuron’s activity represents bits of information (though not simply 0/1; more complex, analog-like encoding is used). Neuroscientists have mapped specific computations to certain circuits – for instance, the retina (part of the brain) computes a filtered, processed version of visual input (detecting edges, motion) before the signal even reaches higher visual centers. The cortex, with its six-layered structure, appears to implement a kind of hierarchical processing: lower areas handle simple features, higher areas combine them into complex concepts (a well-studied example is the visual hierarchy from V1 up to inferotemporal cortex, where neurons respond to increasingly abstract features, from lines to shapes to faces). Cognitive functions like memory can be understood computationally as well: the hippocampus encodes and retrieves episodic data (like a biological memory address system), while the prefrontal cortex acts akin to a central executive, manipulating working memory akin to RAM in a computer. Of course, brains are not just like our man-made computers – they are analog, stochastic, and plastic (rewiring with experience) – but the consensus in neuroscience is that they are essentially machines for input-output transformations of information. This is why we can interface brains with computers (e.g. brain–computer interfaces) by translating neural signals into digital signals and vice versa. It is also why we can simulate aspects of brain function on computers. The successful mapping of many cognitive tasks onto algorithms (from logic puzzles to image recognition) reinforces the idea that intelligence can be replicated by computational processes given enough complexity and proper architecture.
Artificial Intelligence and Computation: The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) explicitly approaches intelligence as a computational problem: can we design algorithms that exhibit intelligent behavior? Over decades, AI researchers have developed systems that perform tasks once thought to require human intelligence. Early examples included theorem-proving programs in the 1950s and 60s that tackled mathematical logic. By the late 20th century, “expert systems” could outperform humans in narrow domains by following programmed rules (intelligence.org). A landmark was IBM’s Deep Blue beating the world chess champion in 1997, demonstrating that brute-force computation plus clever heuristics could master a complex intellectual game (intelligence.org). In 2011, IBM’s Watson then defeated human champions on the quiz show Jeopardy! by rapidly processing natural language and vast factual data (intelligence.org). More recently, DeepMind’s AlphaGo (2016) mastered the even more complex game of Go – a feat achieved not by brute force alone but by learning strategies from millions of simulations, essentially approximating human intuition via deep neural networks. AlphaGo’s successors (AlphaZero etc.) learned superhuman play in chess, Go, and shogi without any hard-coded human knowledge, relying purely on self-play and reinforcement learning algorithms. These successes illustrate that many aspects of “intelligence” – pattern recognition, planning, decision-making – can be automated with computation.
Modern AI, especially with deep learning, takes inspiration from the brain’s architecture (layered neural networks) and demonstrates brain-like behaviors such as perception (vision models now rival human accuracy in object recognition) and language understanding (large language models can generate coherent text, translate languages, and answer questions). Such AI systems process information in ways loosely analogous to neurons – through weighted connections and activation functions – reinforcing the notion that if the computation is organized correctly, intelligent behavior emerges. In cognitive science terms, we’ve proven that machines can perform certain cognitive functions. However, whether current AIs truly understand or are conscious is another matter (likely not, as they lack the full spectrum of human-like cognition and embodiment). Nonetheless, the achievements of AI confirm a computational theory of intelligence: essentially, the right algorithms running on the right hardware can solve problems that require reasoning, learning, and adaptation.
Brains vs Computers – Differences and Convergence: While both brains and computers “compute,” there are notable differences. Brains operate with massively parallel analog circuits (neurons firing in concert), whereas traditional computers are serial and digital. As a result, brains excel at tasks like pattern recognition, sensory integration, and learning from few examples – things that have historically been hard for computers. Computers excel at high-speed arithmetic and reliable, repetitive processing – things hard for human brains. But the line is blurring. Computers have become more parallel (multi-core processors, GPU accelerators, neuromorphic chips) and algorithms more brain-like (deep neural nets). Meanwhile, understanding the brain increasingly involves computational modeling; hypotheses in neuroscience are often tested in silico (e.g., modeling neural circuits for memory or vision). A striking comparison is energy efficiency: the human brain can perform on the order of an exa-op (10^18 operations per second by some estimates) while consuming only about 20 watts of power (nist.gov).
In contrast, the first exaflop supercomputer (Frontier, achieved in 2022) uses on the order of 20 megawatts of power to reach that performance (nist.gov). This million-fold gap highlights how evolution’s “technology” of neural computation is extraordinarily efficient, likely due to billions of years of refinement and the brain’s use of low-power analog signaling. This has motivated brain-inspired computing, seeking to design circuits that compute more like neurons to dramatically cut energy costs (nist.gov). The synergy between AI and neuroscience is strong: neuroscience provides clues about how efficient, general learning machines can be built, and AI provides tools and models to test understanding of brain function. Both operate on the premise that intelligence is ultimately a form of information processing that can be abstracted away from its substrate (en.wikipedia.org). In practical terms, this means that an intelligent process (say, visual perception) could be implemented in neurons or in silicon – different hardware, same computation. Indeed, artificial vision systems now take in pixel data and identify objects not unlike how a primate visual system does. The computational paradigm thus not only explains natural intelligence but also guides the creation of artificial intelligence, reinforcing each other.
4. The Human Brain in Context: Natural and Artificial Intelligences
The human brain is often considered the most complex known object in the universe. It packs tens of billions of neurons and hundreds of trillions of synaptic connections into a compact volume, enabling a level of general intelligence that, so far, appears unparalleled. To put this in perspective, the number of synaptic connections in one human brain (on the order of $10^{14}$) is vastly larger than the number of transistors in the largest computer chips or even the parameters in the biggest AI models today; as one science review noted, the human brain’s 86 billion neurons connecting via 100 trillion synapses “overshadows all man-made attempts at intelligence, such as large language models” (academic.oup.com). Beyond sheer scale, the brain’s design – honed by evolution – endows it with extraordinary capabilities: self-repair (plasticity after injury), self-learning without explicit programming, and integration of emotion, creativity, and abstract thought.
Human vs. Animal Intelligence: In the continuum of natural intelligence, humans are a part of, not apart from, the animal kingdom. Our cognitive architecture is built on the same basic neural components as other mammals, and many animals share aspects of what we call intelligence. Chimpanzees use tools and have rudimentary cultures; elephants demonstrate empathy and memory; dolphins and corvids pass the mirror test of self-recognition. However, human intelligence differs in degree and kind. We possess cumulative culture and language: no other species has the ability to transmit knowledge across generations with such fidelity and breadth. Language allows us to communicate arbitrary concepts, ask questions, and share imagination. This has enabled collective intelligence – groups of humans building knowledge together – which far exceeds what any individual brain could do in isolation. As Pinker highlighted, our species’ “knowledge-using, socially interdependent lifestyle” created a cognitive niche (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), letting us exploit reasoning to overcome challenges (e.g. using tools and traps to overcome physically stronger animals) and to exchange know-how via trading and cooperation (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
The result is that human intelligence is not just in our heads; it’s externalized in libraries, the internet, and institutions of science, which amplify our brainpower further. In evolutionary context, the human brain is remarkable for being a “general-purpose” problem solver. Animals typically excel in the ecological niche they evolved for – e.g., a squirrel is genius at remembering locations of buried nuts, a bat excels at acoustic spatial mapping – but humans are moderate at those specific tasks and yet capable of learning to do nearly anything given time. We can learn to dive underwater, to do math, to play chess, to program computers, to compose symphonies – none of which were tasks in our ancestral environment. This generality and openness of our intelligence is a key distinguishing factor. It likely stems from a combination of our abstraction ability (thanks to language and frontal lobe development) and our prolonged childhood learning period that tunes our brain to whatever environment we grow up in.
Human vs. Machine Intelligence: With the advent of AI, an interesting comparison emerges between human brains and artificial intelligences. Current AI systems have achieved superhuman performance in narrow domains (chess, Go, protein folding, large-scale data analysis), yet they lack the broad adaptive general intelligence of a human. A child of five can learn to recognize a cat, pick up a new game by watching a sibling, then ask a whimsical question – all in the same day. By contrast, an AI that is excellent at identifying cats has no clue how to play a board game or what a “question” is, unless explicitly trained for each task.
Human intelligence is characterized by its generalism: the ability to transfer knowledge between domains and improvise in novel situations. Machine intelligence, so far, is characterized by narrow specialization: each system is trained for a specific problem and outside that it’s helpless. However, the gap is narrowing as research pushes toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Models like GPT-4 show sparks of generality – they can solve math problems, answer trivia, write code, and have conversations, all with one architecture. Yet, they still don’t truly understand these tasks in a grounded way; they lack real-world experience, embodiment, and often common sense. The human brain’s embodied nature – being tied into a body with sensory-motor loops – is thought to be crucial for our form of understanding. We learn physics by playing as infants (gravity, object permanence), and we learn social intelligence through living in a community – experiences an AI in a server farm doesn’t have. Some AI researchers now embed agents in virtual or robotic bodies to give them more human-like learning contexts, aiming to bridge this gap.
Another distinction is consciousness and self-awareness. Humans (as well as some animals to lesser degrees) have subjective experience – we feel, we have an autobiographical sense of self, we can reflect on our own thoughts. No AI today credibly claims to have conscious experience; they process information but presumably do not feel anything.
