Despite being reminded almost daily about the power of focus, I keep getting shiny objects in front of my eyes and it’s hard to resist. Let me explain…
I’m a very curious person by nature and I love to pick up and work hard on new skills. Yet, I often get bored with stuff after the initial rush of excitement. That’s why I need to be very religious in setting and maintaining my focus.
My main work in the past few years has been in cybersecurity, most specifically in application security. To you, it might already seem very niched, but it’s not. You can get specialized on a very granular level in AppSec.
I cannot be an all-around AppSec expert because that’s just not possible. It’s too much to learn and too much to master. What I set out for myself a few months ago was to become very good at authentication and authorization system. This is my very clear goal for the near future (at least for the next 12 months). But the shiny objects…
I’m a published author, I did a lot of coding and scripting in the past, I’ve tutored students, I’m nuts on nutrition, fasting, and fitness, I’ve developed a machine learning app, I’m a content creator, I’d like to study smart contract security, I’d like to dive deep into cloud security, I love math, I love learning languages, and on and on. All of these are for me more than just mere passions because I’ve gone quite deep into each of them.
Yet, I need to be very good at authentication and authorization. And I love that. I love that I have a clear goal to work on because it silences all those voices in the background that keep wanting to drag me in other directions.
It’s extremely hard to become very good at something, thereby unperturbed focus is of utmost importance. Now, back into the dungeons…
If you want to get updates on stuff I’m doing:
For authentication&authorization, I am waiting to arrive in the closest easyBox, the book - "Identity and Data Security for Web Development" (https://www.elefant.ro/identity-and-data-security-for-web-development-best-practices-paperback_9488ffe8-3ab0-461f-af89-3ed0606daadf).
Keep rolling, Chris.
Excellent, I really liked your post, and being specific on something will bring you better concentration, in the Bug Bounty world do you recommend like you to focus on a few security issues and not all of them?
